LOADER OPERATOR - SAWMILL OPERATIONS

Location: Ellington, MO

Position Summary: 

The Loader Operator is responsible for safely and efficiently operating a front-end loader or forwarder to move logs, lumber, and other materials in support of daily sawmill / scragg mill operations. This position plays a critical role in maintaining production flow, keeping work areas organized, and ensuring materials are handled safely and correctly.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Operate a front-end loader to load, unload, sort, and transport logs, lumber, and materials throughout the sawmill yard and production areas
  • Feed logs to the mill in a timely and efficient manner to maintain steady production
  • Stack, organize, and stage materials according to production needs
  • Perform daily pre-operational equipment inspections and report maintenance or safety concerns immediately
  • Maintain clear travel paths and good housekeeping in the yard and work areas
  • Communicate effectively with sawyers, supervisors, and other crew members to coordinate material flow
  • Follow all company safety policies, procedures, and lockout/tagout requirements
  • Work safely around pedestrians, equipment, and changing weather conditions
  • Assist with other sawmill or yard duties as needed

Safety Responsibilities

  • Operate equipment in a safe, controlled manner at all times
  • Wear required PPE
  • Remain alert to changing conditions, blind spots, and nearby personnel
  • Immediately report hazards, near-misses, or incidents to supervision

Qualifications

  • Previous experience operating a front-end loader or similar heavy equipment preferred
  • Experience in a sawmill, lumber yard, or industrial environment strongly preferred
  • Ability to safely handle large, uneven, or unstable loads
  • Basic mechanical knowledge to identify equipment issues
  • Strong attention to safety and situational awareness
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to sit for extended periods while operating equipment
  • Ability to climb in and out of equipment multiple times per shift
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
  • Ability to see, hear, and communicate clearly in a noisy environment

Work Schedule

  • Day shift, Monday–Thursday (4-day work week)

  • On-the-job training provided
  • Must successfully complete company equipment and safety training

LOADER OPERATOR

Responsibilities

Requirements

  • Proven experience operating heavy construction equipment such as loaders, dozers, backhoes, excavators, cranes, or similar machinery.
  • Construction site experience is highly preferred; familiarity with building sites and material handling is essential.
  • Mechanical knowledge to troubleshoot minor equipment issues and perform basic maintenance.
  • Valid commercial driver’s license with experience driving heavy trucks such as dump trucks, water trucks, roll-off trucks, front loader trucks or tanker trucks.
  • Knowledge of construction safety standards and protocols.
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions while maintaining focus on safety and efficiency.

Position Summary: 

Material Handlers are responsible for moving, staging, stacking, and organizing materials throughout the sawmill and production areas to support safe and efficient operations. These positions play a key role in maintaining production flow, housekeeping, and workplace safety.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Move, stack, sort, and stage lumber, cants, pallets, and materials as directed
  • Feed and remove material from sawmill and downstream equipment as needed
  • Band, strap, or secure material for storage or transport
  • Maintain clear walkways, aisles, and work areas
  • Assist operators by keeping material flowing and preventing backups
  • Identify and report damaged material, quality issues, or safety concerns
  • Use hand tools and material-handling equipment safely and properly
  • Follow all company safety policies, procedures, and work instructions
  • Assist with general cleanup and housekeeping throughout the shift
  • Perform other production-related duties as assigned

Safety Responsibilities

  • Work safely around moving equipment, conveyors, and forklifts
  • Follow proper lifting techniques and request assistance when needed
  • Wear required PPE, including eye, hearing, hand, and foot protection
  • Maintain awareness of pinch points, trip hazards, and moving machinery
  • Immediately report hazards, near-misses, or incidents

Qualifications

  • Previous experience in a manufacturing, sawmill, or industrial environment preferred
  • Ability to follow instructions and work as part of a team
  • Strong attention to safety and situational awareness
  • Willingness to perform physical work and repetitive tasks
  • Forklift experience a plus (certification provided if required)

  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials (up to 50 lbs., with assistance for heavier loads)

The Forklift Operator is responsible for safely operating a forklift to move, stack, load, and unload materials throughout the sawmill and production areas. This position supports production flow, inventory control, and safe material handling while maintaining awareness of personnel, equipment, and changing conditions.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Operate forklifts to move lumber, pallets, materials, and finished products safely and efficiently
  • Load and unload trucks, trailers, and material racks as required
  • Stack and store materials in designated locations according to instructions
  • Supply production areas with materials to prevent downtime
  • Verify loads are stable, secure, and within equipment capacity limits
  • Perform daily pre-operational forklift inspections and report issues immediately
  • Maintain clear aisles, travel paths, and work areas
  • Communicate with supervisors and coworkers to coordinate material movement
  • Follow all company safety policies, procedures, and traffic rules
  • Assist with other production or material handling duties as assigned

Safety Responsibilities

  • Never exceed rated load capacities or operate unsafe equipment
  • Wear required PPE including eye, hearing, hand, and foot protection

  • Manufacturing, sawmill, or industrial experience strongly preferred
  • Ability to safely handle long, uneven, or heavy loads

  • Strong communication and teamwork skills
