The Forklift Operator is responsible for safely operating a forklift to move, stack, load, and unload materials throughout the sawmill and production areas. This position supports production flow, inventory control, and safe material handling while maintaining awareness of personnel, equipment, and changing conditions.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Operate forklifts to move lumber, pallets, materials, and finished products safely and efficiently
  • Load and unload trucks, trailers, and material racks as required
  • Stack and store materials in designated locations according to instructions
  • Supply production areas with materials to prevent downtime
  • Verify loads are stable, secure, and within equipment capacity limits
  • Perform daily pre-operational forklift inspections and report issues immediately
  • Maintain clear aisles, travel paths, and work areas
  • Communicate with supervisors and coworkers to coordinate material movement
  • Follow all company safety policies, procedures, and traffic rules
  • Assist with other production or material handling duties as assigned

Safety Responsibilities

  • Operate forklifts in a safe, controlled manner at all times
  • Yield to pedestrians and maintain awareness of surroundings
  • Never exceed rated load capacities or operate unsafe equipment
  • Wear required PPE including eye, hearing, hand, and foot protection
  • Immediately report hazards, near-misses, or incidents

Qualifications

  • Previous forklift operating experience preferred
  • Manufacturing, sawmill, or industrial experience strongly preferred
  • Ability to safely handle long, uneven, or heavy loads
  • Good depth perception, coordination, and situational awareness
  • Basic mechanical knowledge to recognize equipment concerns
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to sit for extended periods while operating equipment
  • Ability to climb on and off equipment multiple times per shift
  • Ability to work in a noisy, dusty industrial environment
  • Ability to see, hear, and communicate effectively

Work Environment

  • Indoor and outdoor production areas
  • Exposure to noise, dust, vibration, and varying temperatures

Work Schedule

  • Day shift, Monday–Thursday (4-day work week)

Training & Certification

  • Forklift certification required (company provided if needed)
  • On-the-job training provided
  • Must successfully complete company safety training prior to independent operation
